For the first move, I usually ensure my dudes are safe and see where the AI goes. It seems like no two people have similar experiences. I really wish I could help, but honestly the best thing to do is to keep trying. Victory isn't nearly as satisfying as it should be. The AI always seem to be one or two steps ahead of me. I'm through Mission 18 and I feel that every single victory was a case of me getting lucky.
Personally, it feels a bit unfair when the AI has control of units that you dont yet, aka the sniper and grenadier. If anyone has beat this level, and could provide some tips, then it would be most appreciated. I have tried multiple tactics including both advancing to the enemies and trying to stay put and let them come to me. 2 machine guns are in a room directly south of your machine gun and shotgun duo, the grenadier is in a room directly south of your solo shotgun, and the remaining troops are in the southwest. The enemy has I believe 5 units, including a sniper and a grenadier along with 3 machine guns.
It is one where you start with 3 machine gunners with and 2 shotguns up north ( 2 machine guns are to the northwest and 1 machine gun with 1 shotgun to northeast, and the other shotgun a little south of the 2 machine guns to the northwest). However, I am a stuck on what I believe is mission 6. This is quite embarrassing to be stuck on a mission this early in the game more so, considering that I am a veteran of Xcom.
